Arkansas Tech University is a mid-sized, state-supported collegiate institution located in Russellville, which is the county seat and largest city in Pope County, in the US state of Arkansas, having a population estimated at a number of more than 27 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Russellville is best known for the fact that is home of Arkansas Tech University and Arkansas Nuclear One, the state's only nuclear power plant.
Arkansas Tech University was created in 1909, by Act 100, of the Arkansas General Assembly, first starting as the Second District Agricultural School, the decision to be created on Rusellville being taken one year later. In October 1910, Arkansas Tech held the first classes and 15 years later, the school took on the first two years of college instruction, and became Arkansas Polytechnic College, being renamed by the General Assembly to reflect this change in purpose. The institution's current name was adopted in July, 1976.
Athletics
The athletic teams from Arkansas Tech are known as the Wonder Boys (men) and the Golden Suns (women), which compete in NCAA Division II, in the Gulf South Conference, in various sports, including in football, basketball, baseball, golf, volleyball, tennis and softball. The university's Golden Suns basketball program is currently ranked among the top five in NCAA Division II history in winning percentage and all-time wins, the football team also being one of the most popular sports at Arkansas Tech, having a ''win portfolio'' of 17 AIC football championships, won between 1931 and 1994.
